The tradition of Turkey for the holidays has been around for Centuries. Before the 1900′s beef was used primarily for milk. Chickens are a little too small to feed a large crowd of people while turkey as it turns out is the perfect meal for a large crowd. Turkey was also eaten by the British during certain holidays along with geese, swans, and even peacocks on special occasions. In fact the Turkey was so popular that it almost beat out the Eagle as our National Bird.
In 1863 President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a National Holiday even though the tradition was begun years before.

Of course the “fixens” vary considerably from state to state but things like stuffing, cranberry sauce,
mashed potatoes and green vegetables usually adorn every Thanksgiving day feast today.

Happy Thanksgiving to all may your holidays be painted with Cheer.
